The USS GROWLER will open for tourists at the Intrepid Museum on 20 May 2009 - the second day of Fleet Week in New York Harbor. She looks great.

The monument is still moving and will be in place, hopefully, this month. Pat Householder is providing us with Honorary Submariner certificates for the CO and COS, Naval Base Ventura County. I'll alert you in plenty of time when the dedication will be held.

Bob,

I hope you can post some pictures of the Growler and mention the work that was done to get it back into shape. It would be interesting stuff.

She's beautiful and work is still being done inside. The Growler Association is sending people back during Fleet Week to indoctrinate the new docents and I'll have them take plenty of photos....Bob

Bill,

I'll send all sorts of photos. Can you make it down to the Regulus Monument Memorial Ceremony on 31 May at Point Mugu?

Bob - the opening is in the middle of the week?  What plans are there for the weekend of May 23-24?  I'm only an hour and half away in New Jersey I'd sure like to see her.  So far every time I've been in New York it's been with friends who wanted a tour of the city and they didn't have a submarine on their list of things to do or see.  Grrr!

I've offered up to do tours on the USS Becuna in Philly.  So now when my wife is working on the weekend I'll go over there one day.  They are a little less formal over there.  Usually only have a tour guide there when someone volunteers.

Growler official opening is 21 May 2009 and a dozen or more shipmates will be there, including the last skipper, CDR. Robert. Owens. I can't go due to knee replacement on 7 May but have been following the email traffic and some of the crew will remain through 23/24 May. Tell the gate you're a USSVI friend of members of the Growler Crew and hopefully they'll let you on free. They will be busy instructing docents. Some of them are then flying out for the Regulus Memorial Dedication on 31 May

Rode Becuna for my summer cruise in 1958. What a great boat and crew. It was the first time Midshipmen had summer cruises on submarines - thanks to Admiral Fluckey.

Bob,

That would be really great to see the pictures. I can't make the 31st at Magu due to a family commitment but I really wish I could. Besides seeing the Memorial Cerimony, I would love to drive Old Highway 1 down to Santa Monica and back like I used to back in the days when I lived in Santa Barbara. I loved that drive. Hopefully, I'll be able to come down to Pt. Magu and meet you there.

The reopening went exceptionally well. The last skipper of the Growler gave the keynote speech and about a dozen of the former crew members spent a couple days going through her. They report a great renovation job. More access to spaces have been made and the boat was completely repainted, in and out. Then they spent a couple days instructing docents. They spun yarns that would make all of us proud and left visitors/tourists with mouths agap. The following week a hundred submariners from Southern California mustered at Missile Park, Point Mugu for the dedication ceremony of our very own monument to the Regulus Submarine Force. Every one present was astonished at the beauty of LIB's monument. It's the most impressive piece in Missile Park sitting alongside the Regulus I Missile. The Sea Bees from Naval Construction Regiment 30 built a huge base for the monument and installed it. The instructions from the manufacturer in Minneapolis were perfect as the Sea Bees had never mounted a monument in this fashion before. Local USSVI Parche Base of Ventura County was present 100% including all of our WWII SubVets. Thanks to everyone that helped make the occasion and monument a success...Bob

Bob, please send me some pictures of the Growler reopening and I'll size down a couple to put up here.

There is a picture of Bob and Michael and the memorial stone when you go to LIBs web page and look under meeting photo.

Here are a couple of pictures. They were already downsized when sent, so couldn't do much to improve them.

First is CDR Owens and Growler Association President Duane "Hotdog" Heatwole cutting the ribbon the second is Our “Docent Training” Team on renovated GROWLER  CDR Robert Owens last skipper of the Growler is in the middle.
